Mount Kinabalu (Malaysia: Gunung Kinabalu) is a prominent mountain on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is in the east Malaysian state of Sabah, located and is considered to Kinabalu National Park, a world cultural heritage protected. Kinabalu is the highest peak in Borneo Crocker Range and is the fourth highest mountain in the Malay Archipelago to Papua Puncak Jaya, Puncak Trikora and Puncak Mandala. Mount Kinabalu is also the 20th highest mountain in the world by topographical importance.
In 1997, a new survey established satellite technology its summit (known as Low's Peak) height at 4095 meters (ft 13 435) above the sea level, which (20 ft) around 6 meters less than the previously expected and previously published figure of 4101 meters (13,455 ft).
The mountain and its surroundings are among the most important biological sites in the world, identified with more than 4,500 plant species, 326 bird species and 100 mammal species. Among this rich collection of wildlife species are known as the giant Rafflesia plant and the orang-utan. Mount Kinabalu has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
Low's Peak can easily be climbed by a person in good physical condition and there is no need for mountaineering equipment at any point on the main route. Other peaks along the massif, however, require rock climbing skills.
